The Update | Scotty McCreery Coming to Packard; Lake Milton Disc Golf Course Opens

WARREN, Ohio – Scotty McCreery will come to Packard Music Hall on Feb. 12 with special guests Tenille Arts and King Calaway.

Tickets are $75, $55, $45 and $35, and go on sale Friday, Oct. 29, at 10 a.m. at Ticketmaster.com and at the Packard box office.

McCreery released his fifth studio album, “Same Truck,” in September. The first single, “You Time,” hit No. 1 on both the Billboard and Mediabase country radio charts later that month, and the second single “Damn Strait” is out now. McCreery co-wrote 10 of the 12 songs on the album.

The North Carolina native achieved new heights in the last few years by earning three back-to-back No. 1 hits from his most recent album “Seasons Change:” “Five More Minutes,” “This Is It,” and “In Between.”

Disc Golf Course Opens at Lake Milton

LAKE MILTON, Ohio – A disc golf course has opened at at Lake Milton State Park.

The course, installed by the state natural resources department, is free and open daily.

“It’s exciting to add Lake Milton State Park to the growing number of state parks with disc golf courses,” said Lake Milton State Park Manager John Trevelline. “Disc golf is a popular and family-friendly sport and the new course complements other day-use amenities at Lake Milton.”

Located near the park office at 16801 Mahoning Ave., the new 18-hole course features a wooded landscape and a unique combination of disc golf holes that can be enjoyed by players of all skill levels. Benches with scenic views of the lake have been placed throughout the course to offer a place to relax between holes.

Currently, players need to provide their own equipment. In addition to disc golf, Lake Milton State Park offers boating, fishing, hiking, archery, hunting and other outdoor activities.

High School Playwriting Festival

WARREN, Ohio – High school juniors and seniors in the Mahoning and Shenango valleys are invited to compete in Kent Trumbull Theatre’s inaugural Young Playwrights Festival next spring.

Participants must submit a 15-20 minute script that will be judged by theater professionals and faculty. The top five or six students will produce their plays for local audiences at the Kent Trumbull Theatre, April 22-24 and April 29-May 1.

The deadline for consideration is Feb. 1. For competition rules, as well as more information, visit Kent.edu/trumbull/theatre.

Students who want to continue studying theater and earn a bachelor of arts in theater studies at the campus can compete for scholarships. High school juniors and seniors from Trumbull County, or any neighboring county may submit their application for consideration in the acting, playwriting or technical pathways. Up to six $2,000 renewable scholarships will be offered.

Playhouse Receives $5K Grant

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — The Youngstown Playhouse has received a $5,000 grant from the Kennedy Family Fund, a component fund of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley. The grant will be used for general operating expenses as the Playhouse returns to live performances and regular programming following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Octubafest at McDonough Museum

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Octubafest, presented by the Dana Tuba/Euphonium Society, is making a return appearance on Friday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m. at the McDonough Museum of Art.

The recital is free and open to the public. Masks are required in all YSU buildings.

Honoring the rich heritage of the tuba and euphonium, Octubafest was established in  1973 at Indiana University School of Music, and is generally a concert or series of concerts and public recitals showcasing the solo and ensemble repertoire for tuba and euphonium.

Exhibition of Nature Paintings by Tom Harwood

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – An exhibition of paintings by local artist Tom Harwood will open Oct. 27 in the Weller Gallery of Fellows Riverside Gardens, and run through Jan. 9. Admission is free. An artist reception will take place opening day from 5 to 7 p.m.

“A Love Affair with Nature” includes selected works for the show that feature the relationship between light and color in landscape paintings. Media includes watercolors and oils.

The Springfield native’s paintings can be found in private collections across the United States and abroad.
