Third Class Is Back in the Recording Studio

By Guy D’Astolfo
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — After a four-year break, Third Class will return with some new music this year.

The Youngstown-based indie-pop band is back in the studio to record its sixth album, “Haunted Until the Very End,” which will be released Oct. 3. A record-release party is already scheduled for Oct. 30 at Cedars West End in Youngstown.

“Haunted” will be the band’s first album since 2017’s “Virginia’s Playlist.” Thematically, it will traverse familiar Third Class territory – childlike wonder, nostalgia, small-town life, mortality.

But singer-frontman Lee Boyle suggests there’ll be a change in the delivery.

“We’ve embraced an almost sci-fi mentality to really bring home our demeanor,” Boyle says. “It just fits us.”

After living in Brooklyn for 18 months where he took care of his mother, Boyle and his wife recently moved back to his childhood home in East Palestine. He brought a batch of newly-written songs with him and then reworked them “in a house which I never thought I’d be living in again.”

Third Class has been making its brand of poetic music for more than 20 years – and with the same lineup. Boyle and the other band members – his brother, Jack (drums), and Pepe Parish (bass) – were on the same page when it came to shaping the new songs.

“We had never agreed more on collaborative choices and themes, and all of a sudden we were able to create this crazy album about facing demons, knowing your flaws, thriving in alienation and accepting that everyone has ghosts which, instead of casting out, they might want to hug.”

Jack Boyle has moved to Massachusetts, but the trio has been getting together for recording sessions at Historian Recording in Youngstown. In April, it will resume recording at Ampreon Recorder, also in Youngstown.
